Understanding Meal Planning

Meal planning involves preparing or planning meals in advance to ensure a balanced meal and mostly, your sanity! And it doesn't have to be one of those super organized refrigerators seen on TikTok. I'm talking about simple changes and habits with this goal in mind: Make healthy eating more accessible and less stressful!

Benefits of Meal Planning

  1. Time Efficiency: Planning meals ahead of time can save hours! Instead of scrambling to figure out what to eat after a busy day, you follow your plan.

  2. Cost-Effective: Reducing food waste and avoiding impulse purchases can lead to significant savings over time. Think of that next vacation you can go on with the savings!

  3. Healthier Choices: Meal planning encourages you to think about your food choices in advance, making it easier to incorporate a variety of foods into your diet.

  4. Stress Reduction: Knowing what you will eat each day can alleviate the anxiety that comes with the infamous question, "What's for dinner?" Seriously, my kids would start asking that in the morning if it wasn't for our weekly menu.

  5. Family Involvement: Meal planning can be a fun family activity, allowing everyone to contribute ideas and preferences.

What to Expect from a Meal Planning Consultation with Kat

The Structure

Here’s what you can typically expect from working with me:

  • Learning about you: Together, we will highlight some of your favorite meals. What you like to cook...do you like to cook??? We will figure out your specific needs, such as family size, budget, etc. From there we will look at what your typical week looks like.

  • Creating a Meal Plan: We will plug your favorite meals into your schedule and decide what gets prepped ahead of time and what is left for the day of. We can plan a week or even a whole month together.

  • Grocery Shopping Tips: Lastly, we will chat about how to read labels and how (and when!) to choose fresh produce.

Practical Tips for Successful Meal Planning

While working with me on your meal planning journey will provide valuable insights, here are some practical tips to enhance your meal planning experience:

Start Small

If you’re new to meal planning, begin with just a few meals each week. Create a short plan listing out 3 days and what you plan to make. Schedule when you will go to the store to get your necessary ingredients.

Incorporate Variety

Ever heard of eating the rainbow? Different colors are linked to different nutrients!

Batch Cooking

Consider batch cooking on weekends. Dust out those food prep containers and fill a few days' worth of meals. Freeze them for a longer shelf life. Or prepare larger quantities of staples like grains, proteins, and vegetables, which can be mixed and matched throughout the week to create new meals.

Stay Flexible

Life can be unpredictable, so be prepared to adjust your meal plan as needed. It’s okay to swap meals or change plans based on your schedule. Have some easy to prepare meals stocked. One of my family's favorites is microwavable rice and butter chicken from Costco.
